I hear it's the gold standard in the field. I wish the card art had a bit more to it, but I guess comparing any card games art to Gwent is unfair. Fighting the act 3 boss employed a different strategy each time and it baffles me how the developers were able to balance the amount of combinations of decks there must be while still making the game challenging but doable. By the end of some runs I lost count of how many synergies were in play. Slay the Spire by my account does a fantastic job at being accessible and deep. I recently played Gwent standalone which introduced me to some concepts universal to the genre. I don't have a ton of experience with card games. Slay the Spire has alternate daily challenges, custom modes, challenge modes, multiple characters with completely different decks, and the fast paced execution to make starting a new run exciting and not fatalistic. The tough thing about restarting a game from the beginning and losing your progress is that getting back into the swing of things is a bit draining. I'm adding Slay the Spire to the short list of roguelikes that are good and address problems inherent to roguelikes. In all a really fun game if you like strategizing and specially card games. The visuals are good, the story is almost non existent, and the soundtrack is ok. The game is balanced correctly, for every character there are Godlike cards and Relics, dogwater cards and relics, which made every choice a real choice. My friends that had already played said it was a godlike accomplishment, even more because I had absolutely 0 knowledge on the game, hadn't even looked at the trailers of the game, I just went in with my knowledge from other card games (Most notably Hearthstone).īut talking about the game, the characters are really different from each other, their decks have completely different strengths and weaknesses, and it is up to you to combo it correctly and build the deck + relics that will make you powerful enough, every time I won a new card I'd spend minutes looking at my deck, my relics, the synergies and the antisynergies, that was definitely the thrill.Īlthough controlled by RNG, it isn't really that much, you can plan your route almost completely, I put myself in many advantageous situations by always keeping my options open, "If that fight is easy I can go against this boss, if not I rest", which made strategizing fun throughout the WHOLE game. Slay the Spire is a really fun game, although as per my hours, I won every single run, making my experience a bit short (Did 4 total runs, and each one having 3h+). In short, a very very good rogue-like and probably one the best single player card games ever made. And almost all the cards/relics can make sense in the right run. And it's got its perfect incarnation on the Switch, the portable nature being perfect for such a game.ĭifficulty is pretty well calibrated. Incredibly addictive game that will have you say "just one more battle" all the time. Also it's super nice to see all the statistics that it keeps.īut it's the gameplay that shines. Maybe some events/relics that ask you to choose something are not super clear, as in you miss the question while answering, but overall they did a pretty good job. Very easy/quick to do whatever you want, and solid enough that it's very very rare that you do something by mistake. Graphics and sounds are ok, but don't really matter much. And the three characters are all pretty interesting. Wow this is how a rogue-like should be done!īetween cards, relics, question mark events and the map itself there is enough variety that you have to think pretty hard at every choice how to make the best out of what you have got. Runs are quite lengthy, anywhere from 40min to 2 hours depending on your experience so dying and starting over can be exhausting. If you end a run early or die early on, you will not receive the better starting options. The bosses in a seed can ruin your run if you build your deck a certain way, such as power focused deck and boss powers up when you play a power card. Card types get less interesting/surprising as you get used to the game, but this is an inherent flaw in the genre. +/- You have to adjust to what is available to you per seed, so you can't just decide to use one strategy beforehand +Good modding community with custom characters, cards, etc. +Good card variety which can lead to multiple strategies +Nice difficulty curve on learning card combos +Artwork is distinct and has a certain charm to it +Great Rogue-like deck builder (meaning you build your deck during a run rather than beforehand like a TCG) I still come back and pick it up again here and there. Played enough to unlock ascension runs before reviewing.
