![]() President Herbert Hoover signed an executive order on Apthat created Arches National Monument. The railroad company realized the lucrative potential of the area and contacted the National Park Service to consider making it a national monument. Ringhoffer contacted officials at the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad to determine whether the land could become a tourist attraction. In the early 1920s, an immigrant prospector from Hungary named Alexander Ringhoffer came across the Klondike Bluffs, a similar area with fins and arches to the west of Salt Valley, which he named Devil's Garden. A campground and amphitheater are also available at the site. The trailhead for Devils Garden is located at the end of the main park road. Black Arch is visible as a dark outline from the primitive trail and can be approached via an unmarked sidetrack. Wall Arch, before its collapse in 2008, was also located in Devils Garden just north of Landscape Arch. Several other arches, including Partition, Navajo, Double O, and Private Arch, as well as the Dark Angel monolith and Fin Canyon, are accessed via the primitive loop trail and its spurs. ![]() The trailhead leads directly to Landscape Arch after a 0.8 mi (1.3 km) outbound hike, while Tunnel Arch and Pine Tree Arch can be seen on spur trails on the way to Landscape Arch. The Devils Garden Trail, including more primitive sections and spurs, meanders through the area for 7.2 mi (11.6 km). This is the last major arch along the trail that can be directly accessed by an official trail.Devils Garden is an area of Arches National Park, located near Moab, Utah, United States, that features a series of rock fins and arches formed by erosion. Its trailhead is within throwing distance of Double O Arch. The Dark Angel is a pillar of dark sandstone, rising 150 feet above the surrounding desert. Navajo is heavy and deep, and parallel to Partition on the next fin to the southwest.ĭouble O Arch sits just barely off of the trail, and consists of a large arch in the enormous fin of sandstone, with a smaller arch directly below it. Partition is a window-like arch found along the same fin as Landscape Arch, though farther to the northwest. Navajo Arch and Partition Arch are located on the Navajo Arch Spur Trail, with Partition splitting off of Navajo’s trail. This whole trail is undeveloped, though it is the north end, between Double O Arch and Landscape Arch, that is considered the actual primitive section of the loop. Access to the fins from Wall Arch makes for some great scrambling and free climbing. Wall Arch is just past Landscape Arch, near the beginning of the rocky portion of the trail, and is set back from, and just above the trail, sandwiched into a pretty tight canyon between the sandstone fins. The end of the Devils Garden Trail is the Primitive Loop Trail. This is a nice trail, paved, wide, and level, as good as it gets in the barren wilderness of Arches. Visitors can hike right up to and even underneath many of these marvelous landmarks, though they are cautioned not to climb atop them. At this point visitors can turn back, or can start the actual loop, heading wide to the north, towards the Private Arch spur trail before turning back for Landscape Arch and the parking lot.īetween the Navajo Arch Trail and Double O Arch, a spur trail climbs down to Black Arch, located near the bottom of a rugged chasm between the fins. ![]() Going clockwise, hikers pass Wall Arch, and then Partition and Navajo Arches, clumped together near Landscape, and then climb a massive fin to gain access to short spur trails going to Double O Arch and the Dark Angel pinnacle. This trail will take visitors past Tunnel and Pine Tree arches and then on to Landscape Arch. It is an extension of the Devils Garden Trail itself, though quite a bit rockier and rougher than the Devils Garden Trail. The Devils Garden Primitive Loop is a 6.8-mile trail that circles around Landscape Arch and the Dark Angel spire in the northern end of Arches National Park.
